Randi was born Randi Pedersdatter Holtseteren, meaning Randi, daughter of Peder from the Holtseteren farm. In 1889 she married Mathias Andersen Kankerud (Mathias, son of Anders from the Kankerud farm). In the emigrant protocol Randi is registered as Randi Kankerud. However, they never used that name in America, but called themselves Anderson (Mathias' patronymicon). Mathias had also used that name during his first stay in America, and was registered as "Annerson" in the 1880 cencus. They did not remain the Andersons for long though. Randi signed her letter of December 26th 1895 Randi Rued. Rued is an anglicised abbreviation of Kankerud. They continued using this name for the rest of their lives. The Rued name is still used by their descendants.
